Description:Possibly taken at a rise, an underground shaft driven upwards.

This photograph was taken during the 1921 Miners Strike. During strikes, if miners knew where the coal seams outcropped, they would dig small shafts or open cast mines. People relied heavily on coal at this time for heating and cooking, and so people would go to great lengths to get it.
