Description:Linen background. Worked in cotton thread in shades of green, brown, red, purple, pink, blue and black in cross-stitch, satin stitch and stem stitch. House, garden, cherubs, trees, flowers, butterfly and parrot. Inscribed: 'Frances Francis work'd this age'd 12. 1796' and 'De faithfull unto death'. Frances Francis is believed to have lived in Little Haywood, Staffordshire. From the Staffordshire County Collection. 380mm x 295mm. Verse: 'Set not in your mind on anything on earth but praise your God who first did give you breath crave his blessing on your labours all, and in distress for his assistance call'. Towards the end of the 18th century, samplers taught not only sewing but also literacy in the forms of alphabets, numerals and religious texts. These grew in importance and became an almost essential part of sampler making throughout the 19th century.
