Description:Thomas Bakewell (1761 - 1835) bought Spring Vale from the Jervis family in 1808. Here he established a successful asylum for the insane. When he died his son Samuel Glover Bakewell carried on his work. Thomas Bakewell is buried in St. Michael's Churchyard, Stone.

In 1840 Spring Vale was sold to the Duke of Sutherland. The asylum was moved to Oulton, and later moved again to Church Stretton. The Oulton retreat became St. Mary's Abbey.
