Description:The Grand Junction railway line opened in July 1837. Within the next twelve years lines had opened from Stafford to Wellington and, via Lichfield to Rugby. The suburb of Castletown, en route to Doxey, was built to accommodate the railway workers. The station was built in the early 1840s, but was rebuilt in 1862. Access to the station from the town was much improved by the building of Victoria Road and a new bridge over the Sow. The bridge was replaced in 1933 and Stafford College, built 1937 - 1939, would later occupy the foreground. Beyond would be the extension to the Victoria Park extension, opened in 1930; the Station Hotel (originally the North Western Hotel), whose tower can be seen on the right, the building was demolished in May 1972
