Glazed Earthenware H.6.6 x W.40.6 cm

Large earthenware plaque, thrown and turned by Michael Cardew, decorated by Henry Bergen at Winchcombe Pottery, Gloucestershire, England.

Slip decorated using a paper stencil, lead glazed, base unglazed. Impressed legend around the rim 'WHY LET THE STRVCKEN DEERD GO WEEPE. THE HART VNGALLED PLAY. FOR SOME - MUST WATCH WHILE SOME MUST SLEEPE. SO RVNNES THE WORLD AWAY - M.C. H.B. THE WINCHCOMBE POTTERY. 1932.
