Description:Map of England and Wales, showing county boundries, red and green silk threads on open canvas. From the Staffordshire County Collection.
Needlework maps came into fashion towards the end of the 18th century, but the greater majority were worked in the 19th century.
Many schools decided it would be valuable to incorporate needlework with geography. Numerous schools set them for a leaving task and often the name of the school as well as the stitcher's name are embroidered upon them.
