Date:1927

Description:Since Stafford was first occupied as a settlement it was fortified, at first by natural features - the River Sow on one side and marshland on the other.

Early man-made defences includes the medieval ditches which were also used for drainage. The largest ditch, the Thieves' Ditch, runs parallel to North Walls and can still be traced today dividing the North Walls car park.

The older brickwork on the lower part of the wall is possibly part of the medieval town wall.
