Description:View looking towards Greengate Street. The church tower belongs to St. Chad's.
The timber framed building in the foreground is the Ancient High House, built in 1595. King Charles I stayed here in September 1642, whilst on a recruiting drive during the Civil War. His nephew, Prince Rupert, was said to have taken shots at the weather-cock on St. Mary's tower from the garden of the house.
The timbered building opposite is the Bear Inn, which used to be one of Stafford's coaching inns. On the right is the church of St. Chad, possibly one of the oldest buildings in the town and the buildings in St. Chad's Place can be seen behind the telegraph pole.
In the centre foreground is St. Mary's gate with the building which housed William Marson's 'Olde Curiosity Shoppe', and in later years Harold E. Parkes' music shop.
