Description:The original moated Sandon Old Hall was acquired by the Erdeswick family in 1338, but was sold to Lord Harrowby in 1776. The original building no longer remains, but was still standing in 1852. By this date the hall had been abandoned for the New Sandon Hall, constructed in the mid-eighteenth century.
The present hall was built c.1850 after the earlier building had burnt down. It was designed in the Jacobean style by William Burn.
The gardens were landscaped in the early nineteenth century and several follies were added, including the Pitt Column, Percival's Shrine and a tower which originally adorned the top of Trentham Hall. The park also contains a late eighteenth century ice house.
This photograph is from an album of local views taken by Edward King Tenison (1805-1878), a highly regarded photographer in the early decades of photography. His family seat was at Kilronen, Roscommon, Ireland and he married Louisa Mary Anne Anson, daughter of the 1st Earl of Lichfield, also an accomplished amateur photographer. These images were probably taken during Tenison's visits to his wife's family home, Shugborough.
