Description:Watercolour painting by John Louis Petit (1801-1868). General view of the remains at Croxden Abbey, with the ruins of one of the east end apses in the foreground.

The Cistercian Abbey of Croxden was founded in the 1170s by Bertram de Verdun, lord of Alton. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538 the roofs were removed and the buildings quarried for building stone. The monastic ruins are the most extensive in Staffordshire.
