T.P. Wood was born in Great Haywood, the son of Joseph and Althea Wood and the elder brother of Samuel, the sculptor. His father, a shoemaker, kept the tollgate on the main North Road in Great Haywood.
he was self taught from an early age, collecting and copying engravings. His work came to the notice of the local architect, Thomas Trubshaw, who encouraged him and took him to London in 1836. He later exhibited at the Royal Academy and other London galleries.
He spent most of his short life sketching and painting in Staffordshire, and was particularly known for his paintings of landscapes, buildings and cattle. A number of local gentry commissioned work from him, including William Salt who was collecting material for a history of Staffordshire. He died of tuberculosis in Little Haywood, aged only 28.
