Date:1800 - 1850 (c.)

Description:This fire mark was formerly displayed on a house in Haughton, near Stafford. Until the early 19th century most organised fire fighting was carried out by private fire brigades belonging to insurance companies. Policy holders would display a fire mark on their buidling to ensure that the brigade would fight the fire. The Norwich Union insurance company was founded in 1797.

The fire mark is circular, with the word 'Norwich' at the top. The Figure of Equity is seated on the right holding a sword and balances. To the left there are two clasped hands in an oval frame. Beneath the figure is a wreath.

Diameter: 195mm.
