Description:This photograph was taken in the early days of the Home Guard as it precedes the full issue of uniform and weapons. Most men are carrying wooden replica guns or double-barrelled shotguns and many are wearing their civilian clothes.

The formation of a new national civil defence force was announced on 14 May 1940. Initially named Local Defence Volunteers, they became known as the Home Guard from 23 July 1940.
