Description:Hearse outside James Rawthorne's funeral premises, which were located behind the Junction Hotel on Newport Road.
Horse-drawn hearses came into use in the later half of the nineteenth century. Most were designed with glass sides and a flat roof, for carrying wreaths and flowers. They were often elaborately decorated with pillars, scrolls and cornices to give a classical or ecclesiastical effect.
The use of horse-drawn hearses continued until the 1930s.
