Date:1890 - 1900 (c.)

Description:This hearse belonged to Mr Boult, who was an undertaker (he also hired out carriages for special occasions, such as weddings). He is seen here in the doorway of his premises on Eastgate Street. On the left is The Shrew public house; the building on the right later became Betty Cooper's cafe.

Horse-drawn hearses came into use in the later half of the nineteenth century. Most were designed with glass sides and a flat roof, for carrying wreaths and flowers. They were often elaborately decorated with pillars, scrolls and cornices to give a classical or ecclesiastical effect.

The use of horse-drawn hearses continued until the 1930s.
