Description:During the first year farm camp some of the boys were found work potato picking on a nearby farm. Their camp leader Mr Edward Wilson, wrote a short account of the boys' experiences. "The potato picking was hard work as there was no opportunity for slacking off for a few moments. The boys were mainly employed in removing the tops from the potato plants. When they had finished one or two rows, the (horse-drawn) machine came along and threw the potatoes out of the ground with its whirling spikes. Then the boys had to load them into bags. This went on all the time, so I think the boys really earned their pay."
