Description:This building on Earl Street was originally the British School. The school opened in 1843 with funding from the British and Foreign School Society and a wealthy Methodist, Mrs Birch. Parents of the pupils had to pay 1 1/2 d per week and provide slates and pencils.

Due to a lack of resources the school closed in the 1850s, but reopened in 1862. A bad report by H.M. Inspectors in 1877 cost the British School half its government. Improvements were made, but by 1894 the school had to be handed over to the School Board, who replaced it with a new school on Corporation Street.

The building was demolished in the 1960s.
