Description:Detail from a hand-drawn map, dating from the late 17th century, showing the house built out of the dissolved priory of Blackladies, near Brewood. The original Benedictine priory was founded circa 1150 and dissolved in 1538; the site then passed to the Giffard family of Chillington Hall. The name ‘Blackladies’ comes from the colour of the habits worn by the Benedictine nuns.
