Description:The Earl of Shrewsbury's State Chariot with the coach house at the Staffordshire County Museum, housed in Shugborough's servants' quarters, in the background. The Earl of Shrewsbury's State Chariot was made by Hooper & Co. Ltd. of London in about 1890. It is a very fine conventional state chariot, painted deep maroon with scarlet trim and covers, brown velvet upholstery, brass gilt mounts and lamps. It has 12 and 14 spoke iron tyred wheels. It formerly belonged to Earl of Shrewsbury's Estate, Ingestre, Staffordshire. The Shrewsbury State Carriage was used for the state visit to Ireland in 1911, and at the coronations of King Edward VII and Queen Elizabeth II. On the latter occasion the chestnut horses, borrowed from Mitchell & Butler's Brewery in Birmingham, proved temperamental and after four and three-quarter miles finally refused to move. Lord Shrewsbury, whose presence as Premier Earl and Lord High Steward of Ireland was essential, covered the last two hundred yards to Westminster Abbey by car.
