Description:Two locomotives pictured at the Marston, Thompson & Evershed Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent.
The locomotive on the left is thought to be a Baguley diesel shunter. The steam locomotive on the right was built in 1924 by Hawthorn Leslie and Company, with a works number of 3581. It operated as the No. 3 locomotive at the Marston, Thompson & Evershed Brewery until 1955, when it became the spare and then only used for five weeks a year while the main locomotive was overhauled. In 1967, No.3 moved to the Foxfield Railway, where it has been preserved and after long term restoration it returned to steam in July 2021 and became operational in December 2021.
John Marston & Son Ltd. was founded in 1834. Initially based at the Horninglow Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent, the company moved to its current site at the Albion Brewery on Shobnall Road in 1898, when it merged with John Thompson & Son Ltd. In 1905 it merged with Sydney Evershed to become Marston, Thompson & Evershed. In 1999 the brewery was purchased by Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries Ltd. and later was renamed Marston’s PLC.
