Description:This view looks west along the shops on Market Street prior to their demolition in 1963. On extreme left there is a glimpse of the Guildhall and F.W. Woolworths on Market Square. Also, on the left at the end of the row of shops is Lloyds Bank which remains (2025) on the corner of Market Square. On the right is Salter Street. The entire block of shops in the centre was later demolished and replaced with a run of modern shops. When the buildings were demolished in 1963, behind their Georgian looking facades, timber-framed construction dating from the 15th century or 16th century was discovered. On the rooftop prior to the Bank at No. 4, Market Street formerly a tea warehouse, the 18th Century ornamental figures of Chinese tea-tasters can be seen. They were made from brick and tile rubble, cemented together and covered in plaster. The detail was modelled in plaster on a brickwork base. The figures were a form of advertisement at a time when tea was an expensive commodity. When this photograph was taken the shop was 'Motor Cycle Mecca'. After the building was demolished, the figures were temporarily re-positioned on the roof of the former Library at The Green and are now in the County Museum collection.
