Description:During the 1840s two railways were constructed through the park at Shugborough. To minimise damage to the landscape a large cutting was made to accommodate the line. Fences and trees were used to hide the trains from view and the tunnel and bridges were designed to be very grand.
This postcard is of the north portal of the tunnel for the Trent Valley railway. It was designed by John Livock to look like a Norman castle. The tunnel is 777 yards long and was opened in 1847.
