Date:1870 - 1872 (c.)

Description:Stafford's toll-gates were located at Littleworth, Hyde Lea Lane, Derrington, Acton Gate, Sandon, Yarlet, Rowley Park and opposite the castle gates. A toll was a charge for permission to use a road or bridge, the money collected being used for maintenance.

This toll house was situated at the junction of Weston Road and Tixall Road in Littleworth. The roads were turnpikes in 1793. The gates were removed in 1878 and the house was replaced by a public house, The Gate, now (2023) the Metropolitan Bar. The woman in the photograph may be the toll-taker, 40 year old Susannah Grimes.
