Description:Shelton Steel Works had its origins from the early days of the Industrial Revolution. Granville Levison Gower, Marquis of Stafford, started the works in the Etruria Valley next to the Trent and Mersey canal. Rich seams of iron ore and the abundance of coal made Etruria the ideal site.
The Shelton Bar Iron Company (1851-66) was borne of a partnership. In 1866 Shelton started to produce steel as well as iron.
