Date:1967 - 1976 (c.)

Description:Most collieries owned their own locomotives for transporting the coal and men around the colliery site and to the main railway lines.

From the withdrawal of steam locomotives in 1967 until Whitfield colliery ceased drawing coal on 16 January 1976, the traffic was handled by diesel locomotives. In March 1967 two six wheel diesel hydraulic locomotives arrived at Whitfield under their own power via the Biddulph Valley line from the works of Thos. Hill Ltd., fitted with Rolls Royce engines.
