Description:View of Stafford Fire Station on Mill Bank. The fire engine to the left is a Leyland FT4A Pump Escape, registration JRE 294. It was delivered to the Stafford Borough Fire Brigade in December 1939 and was christened “Eveline”, after the Mayoress, Councillor Mrs Eveline Joynes, in front of a large crowd, at a public ceremony held in Stafford’s Market Square on New Year’s Day 1940. The fire engine by the fire station bays is a Dennis Pump Escape.
To the right of the picture is the Canteen Van which was staffed by Voluntary Firewomen who drove, prepared and served up meals when attending large fires. If the van was needed at night, bread, milk and other provisions could be collected from Rowlands grocers in Gaol Road.
The fire station was relocated to Lammascote Road in about 1971.
