Description:The history of the Sherriff's Ride dates back to 1553 when Queen Mary granted Lichfield a charter that included the right to be a County and to have its own sheriff. The terms of the charter included an obligation to "perambulate the new County and City annually on the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 8th September".

The Sheriff's ride involves the Sheriff of Lichfield, and party, riding on horseback around the city on the nearest Saturday to 8th September.
