Description:Reginald Mitchell completed the prototype Spitfire just a year before his death. This aeroplane was capable of 342 m.p.h. and was officially the fastest military aircraft of the time.
This aircraft would be the basic design for the many marques of Spitfire that would help to win the air war for the Royal Air Force. Together with the Hawker Hurricane the Spitfire would be instumental in the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940.
