Description:A group of workers at Richardson & Son Coachbuilders, Wharf Carriage Works, Uttoxeter. Many of the men are holding tools of their trade, including tools for wheelwrighting, leatherworking, blacksmithing and coach painting. The man on the left is believed to be William Richardson.

The business was started by George Richardson, a wheelwright in Bradley Street, when he opened coachbuilding premises at Park Street in the 1840s. The company built a variety of horse drawn vehicles. By 1907 the business began to repair motor vehicles and sell bicycles and by the 1950s was doing very little wheelwrighting or coachbuilding. George's great-grandson sold the business, by then a motor garage, in 1962.
