Description:The 2nd South Staffords were one of the airborne units who fought at the Battle of Arnhem in Holland in 1942. This was a disastrous action in which huge casualties were sustained and in which the Regiment won two VCs. (They were awarded to Major Robert Cain and to L/Sgt Jack Baskeyfield from Burslem). Since then, a strong bond has been formed between the Dutch people of Arnhem and the survivors of the Battle. Each September many Arnhem veterans make the pilgrimage back to the town to remember their fallen comrades and to renew links with the local people (many of whom hid the soldiers in their houses during the battle and helped them to escape afterwards).

This picture shows such an occasion in 1948. The procession is on its way to the memorial on the Bridge.
