Description:Women's Land Army parade on Market Square, Stafford.
The WLA began during the First World War to help combat food shortages and fill the vacancies left by the men who had entered military service. The women who enrolled had the option of working in agriculture, timber cutting or foraging (animal feeds).
Many WLA parades and rallies were held across the country during the war years. Local dignitaries and notable figures often attended to make speeches and presented proficiency certificates and badges.
Here members of the WLA are being presented with good service badges by Lady Gaunt and Mrs Levett, Chairwoman of the Women's War Agricultural Committee.
