Description:The Carnegie Library built in 1905 is seen on the left, with the Assembly Rooms on the far right. The tower of St. Editha's can be seen in the background. The Assembly rooms were built by a public subscription that celebrated Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887, and were opened two years later. It was used as the venue for large public meetings and theatricals, and was still used for concerts, pantomimes and such like in 2003. The library was built in 1905 from money provided by the great American philanthropist Mr Andrew Carnegie. There had been other libraries in Tamworth before this, but these charged for membership and many people could not afford the fees. The new Carnegie Free Library was free for people to use.
