Date:1948

Description:The steps on the left lead to a solicitor's office. This pathway was formerly the approach to the old parish church (1340-1837), and behind the trees is part of the churchyard. The trees were taken down in 1948. the three storey building in front of the church is Cumberland House, built in 1745. During the early 20th century the ground floor was used as a veterinary surgery, before becoming a music shop, and in 1950 a library. From the 1960s Cumberland House has been used for accommodation.
The fountain in the centre of the road was erected by Miss Bourne in 1879 as a memorial to her parents. Mr Bourne was a surgeon in the town. The building on the right, enclosed by a wall was built in 1758 as the rectory. It remained so until 1982, when it was sold. By 2003 the building had become the Manor Restaurant.
