Description:This photograph taken behind the Art College shows the recently formed Ambulance Brigade. On the front row from left to right are: Mr Shufflebottom (Secretary), Mr John Wood (Stationmaster), Joseph Lovatt, William Hassall, Doctor Burnett, Sergeant Morton, and Samuel Godwin.
Originally the town's ambulance men were workers at railway stations in Leek and the surrounding area, having being encouraged to join the brigade by the railway companies who wanted their workforce to take up first aid work. Following appeals in the local press other men joined up, and the Leek Ambulance Brigade was officially formed in August 1915. Members meetings were held in the Carr Gymnasium on Stockwell Street.
