Date:1860 - 1872 (c.)

Description:The building used to stand at the junction of Sheepmarket and Stanley Street (formerly Custard Street), on the site of the old Market Cross. It was built in about 1806 and used for a variety of purposes. The Leek Savings Bank operated from the upper room between 1823 and 1853, while the basement housed two cells for the temporary imprisonment of felons. The ground floor was originally open, but was later enclosed by windows and used as a newsroom. The top room was used by magistrates and as a meeting place by the Leek Improvement Commissioners, the local government of the day to discuss any local public business. Sadly in 1872 the Town Hall was condemned to be demolished by the Leek Town Lands Trustees, who considered it too small for the growing town. The building was bought by Mr J. Flower, for £85 who used most of the stone to build Portland House, (itself now demolished), formerly in Rosebank Street.
