Date:1865 - 1885 (c.)

Description:Mr. Allen was a senior partner in the solicitors firm of Hacker and Allen, whose offices were at 48 St. Edward Street. He was also a Law Clerk to the Commission. In 1852 he married Eliza Clowes and they had 14 children, although not all survived childhood. William held a number of important public appointments in the town and was very involved with local sporting society, particularly the Leek Moorlands Cricket Club, and the North Staffordshire (horse) Races. In later years he was known as the 'Grand Old Man' of Leek, because he was the last survivor among a number of influential local men of the Victorian era.
