Description:A group of Bass & Co. firemen posed in front of the Bass No.2 Fire Engine, Merryweather Steamer. The three men in the centre of the front row wearing peaked hats and double epaulets are the superintendent and his deputies. The four men with single epaulets were engine drivers whose job it was to fire up the engine and attend to the pump mechanism. Of the 21 men, 18 were employed in the Engineers Department and the other 3 in the Stables Department. The Stables men, sat above the horses that drew the fire engines and vans which carried personnel and horses. On the back row: Harry Wayne: Excavator, Jack Elson: Plumber's Labourer, H.
