Below the sculpted medallion, bearing a family crest, can be seen the following inscription:
‘This Monument was erected by order of the Honorable Thomas Clifford To the Memory of the Honorable Barbara Clifford his beloved Wife, Whom he survived but ten Months and sixteen days. His Life was a Pattern of every Social and Moral Virtue, And his Death of Heroic Patience, Resignation and Christian Piety Aged 54 Years. R.I.P.
Sacred to the Memory of The Honorable Barbara Clifford, Youngest Daughter and Co-heiress to James Lord Aston. A Faithfull, Patient, Compliant Wife: A Tender, and Affectionate Mother, An Indulgent carefull Mistress, Giving good Example to her Children and Family By her Piety, Mildness and Good nature. Humane, Charitable, Benevolent and Compassionate To the Poor.
Endowed with every Virtue and good quality that adorns her Sex. She was a pattern for all Wives and Mothers. And leaving a numerous Family of twelve Children, She died after a miscarriage, the 2nd of August 1786, Aged 39 years. R.I.P.’
