Date:1st of May 1984

Description:May Day 1984 saw a large rally in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent in support of the miner's strike. Margaret Thatcher, who the lady in this photograph has dressed up as, was Prime Minister at the time of the strike and was determined that the strikers should not be allowed to influence decisions about the future of the coal industry. Margaret Thatcher was recognised as a capitalist and this belief was in marked contrast to that amongst many in the mining community.
