Description:The Butt Lane carnival was a popular event and entertainers such as Colin Campbell's band would have entertained people there. Carnivals in the area were often entertained by what were known as 'Crasher Bands', possibly because of the noise they made. Eventually the Butt Lane and Kidsgrove carnivals were combined and took place at Clough Hall. The 'policeman' the gentleman to the right of centre of the photo (standing behind/between two kneeling figures with blackened faces)in the photograph is thought to be, William Tickle born West Bromwich 1869,who lived with his family at 19, Church Street Butt Lane (or other nearby addresses) from 1900 to about 1922-1924.
