Description:A silhouette portrait of Alfred Ronalds, published in the 11th edition of 'The Fly-Fisher's Entomology' (1913).

Alfred Ronalds (1802-1860) arrived in Staffordshire in 1829, where he wrote a book on fly fishing that is regarded as a classic. He built an observatory for his research on the River Blithe adjacent to his home Leafields near Gratwich. 'The Fly-Fisher’s Entomology' was first published in 1836 and numerous editions have been issued since. Ronalds also designed and made fishing tackle, some of which continued to be sold for over a century.
