Date:15th of June 1909

Description:A wedding group outside Offley Grove, Adbaston. This is the wedding of Miss Emily Halstead Vickers of Offley Grove and James Cecil Wrigley of Bent House, Meltham, Huddersfield, which took place on 15 June 1909 at St.Mary's Church, High Offley.

James Wrigley, grandson of Emily and Cecil Wrigley, has identified the people in this group as follows. The bride is Emily Halstead Vickers (known as Emily) and the groom is James Cecil Wrigley (known as Cecil). Next to the bride is Ellen Gertrude Grant Vickers (nee Hargreaves), mother of the bride. Her husband, Valentine Whitby Vickers, was long since dead having died in 1899 at the age of 44. Next to the groom, standing slightly behind, is William Wrigley, father of the groom and his wife, mother of the groom and standing immediately next to the groom, Mary Ellen Wrigley (nee Garnett). The bridesmaids are the three Vickers sisters of the bride and one Wrigley, sister of the groom. Seated are (left) Julia Maud Vickers (known as Maud) and (right) Gertrude Mabel Vickers (known as Mabel or May), and standing (far right) Mildred Jessie Vickers (known as Jessie). The bridesmaid standing to the right of and slightly behind Mary Ellen Wrigley is Constance Mary Wrigley (known as Connie). Standing behind the bride is William Garnett Wrigley (known as Garry), elder brother of the groom. Standing right at the back on the far left with face partially obscured is Valentine Edward Vickers (known as Eddie), eldest brother of the bride. There are three clergymen in the photograph. The vicar standing in front of Eddie Vickers is probably his uncle, Rev William Vernon Vickers who is standing next to his wife, Beatrice Emily Vickers (nee Barney). He solemnised the marriage. The other two vicars are likely to be the clergy that took part in the marriage ceremony, Rev Wilford of Cowton and Rev Lowe. The woman at the back on the left hand side, between Beatrice Emily Vickers and Ellen Gertrude Grant Vickers is unidentified but may be a member of the Hargreaves family. The young man in the back row next to the vicar is unidentified.

The house was known as Hill Hall until the Vickers family purchased it in 1858. They changed the name to Offley Grove in about 1860. Soldiers were billeted here during the 2nd World War. It was demolished in about 1956.

Thos photograph is believed to have been taken by Harry Osbourne of Woodseaves.
