Date:7th of December 1957

Description:Miss Gwen Berryman (Doris Archer of the BBC radio serial “the Archers”), opened the Hixon Bazaar on the afternoon of Saturday 7 December. In this photograph she is signing autographs for three young women from Hixon. Also in the group is the Vicar, Rev. W Edge. Please contact us if you recognise anyone else in the photograph.

The Christmas Bazaar was held in Hixon Memorial Hall in aid of the Church restoration fund. The Vicar introduced Miss Berryman, who received a bouquet of chrysanthemums from Miss Jill Bradley who was aged six. There was a vote of thanks proposed by Mr R W Bettson (People’s warden). It was seconded by Mr A Shaw (Vicar’s warden). During the afternoon Miss Berryman was kept busy signing autographs and pictures of the “Archers” cast and by relating some of the interesting and amusing items she had experienced whilst recording.

In charge of the stalls and competitions were: Lucky Dip - Michael Barlow, Michael Fisher and Robert Preston; Miscellaneous - Mrs K Fradley and Kathleen Fradley; Sweets - Mrs M Chell, Mrs N Ward (junior) and Mrs E Martin; Cakes - Mrs C Ives and Mrs E Evans; Fancy goods - Mrs M Davies, Mrs M Deakin, Mrs E Boult and Olwyn Davies; Household stall - Mrs E Bettson and Pauline and Heather Bettson; Produce - Mr R Bettson and Mr H Deakin. Steward, Mr S Bris[…] (the rest of this man’s name is missing from the newspaper article).
