Description:The sash of office for “Miss Co-operator 1952” is being presented to Miss Jean Exton, aged 17, by one of the judges, Mr S H Adamson, at a function held at the Stafford Assembly Rooms on Saturday 11 October. Also in the group are Mrs M Hales (Judge), Mrs Joan Horton, runner up and Mrs G I Wilson (Judge). This was the first event of the Stafford and District Co-operative Society’s Festival Week, which began with a dance and the choosing of “Miss Co-operator”.

Miss Exton was selected as the winner from twenty candidates. The competition had been open to employees, members and member’s daughters. As the winner her duties were to attend a series of social occasions during the following week which were held mainly at the Assembly rooms. The organisers, who were members of the Society’s Education Committee, were pleased for Jean who was an assistant at the Society’s mantles department at the Gaolgate Street store in Stafford.

On the following Monday night, Jean was present at a concert given by the Crescent Six for 50 Stafford pensioners. During the evening Mr H Cottrell, Secretary of the Education Committee, introduced Alderman C H Merrey, Managing Secretary of the Society. He said that with the exception of the war years, the Society had annually promoted a Festival Week, with the object of getting more members. He added that the Society had grown over the years and was one of the biggest trading concerns in the area. On Tuesday the Women’s Co-operative Guild held an afternoon meeting, followed by tea, to which friends were invited and a concert was given by the Revellers of Ripley. On Wednesday night there was a dance for employees. On Thursday there was a whist drive and another concert given by the Crescent Six members of the Co-operative Wholesale Society, Manchester. On Friday there was a mammoth whist drive at the Assembly Rooms and a dance at St. Joseph’s Hall, Stone for the benefit of Stone employees and members.

The Festival Week concluded with a concert in the Assembly Rooms given by the Northern Celebrities. The dances were run by Mr R C Williams and Mr P M Richardson. Arrangements on Tuesday night were in the charge of Mrs E Riley, President of the Women’s Guild. The Chairman of the Education Committee was Mrs L A Vaughan.
