Description:Looking on are Mr W R Yates, Treasurer, Mr J Hill, Secretary and Mrs M V Russell, as Mr C J Horton, of Darlaston (fourth from left) receives from Mr E L Cotterell, President of Staffordshire Beekeepers Association, three certificates recording his status as senior apiculturist, his proficiency as a show judge and his winning of the Joseph Price Rose Bowl. The presentation was made at the Association’s annual meeting at Stafford Technical College on Saturday 12 April.

The meeting was preceded by a Price Memorial Lecture given by Mr E W T Morris of Birmingham, who demonstrated some of his own beekeeping inventions. During the meeting the report of the Secretary Mr J Hill showed that 45 new members had been enrolled during the year, with 23 at Uttoxeter. The Association was grateful to Mr S H Elkes, of Uttoxeter for his interest in the Association’s work and for his promise to give a trophy at the next annual show at Stafford for the best exhibition of wax. Thanks was also due to Mr C H Stevenson, who acted as Local Secretary at Uttoxeter, and to Mr Dempster and his officers for their activity in respect of foul brood, his report revealed that 381 apiaries had been visited and 906 colonies examined during the year.

Over £25 had been lost on the three shows held during the year. The Treasurer, Mr W P Harford, said this had been the case for a number of years and was due to the entrance fees not covering the value of the prizes. Expenditure had exceeded income by £18, partly due to two years honorarium being given to the Secretary at the same time and two years expenses to the Stafford section. The Association started the year with £8 12s. 4d. finishing with £5 2s. 9d. Members subscriptions brought in £119 16s. 6d. and donations were £7 7s.

Officials elected included: Patron, the Earl of Lichfield, President, Mr E L Cotterell, Vice-Presidents, Mr C E Deeming, Mr H Joynes, Mr G J Plant, Mr F Rowcliffe, Mrs M A Saint and Mr C P Westwood; Treasurer, Mr W P Harford, Secretary, Mr J Hill and Assistant Secretary, Mr G J Plant.
