Description:Civic visitors and leaders of the local savings movement are pictured at the annual dinner and concert arranged by the Stafford Savings Committee at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Stafford. Seated left to right: Mr John Hurst, (Deputy Commissioner of the National Savings Movement), Mrs Hurst, Councillor P Salmon (Committee Chairman), and the Mayor and Mayoress, Alderman C E Fowke and Mrs Fowke. Please contact us if you recognise anyone else in the photograph.

When Mr Hurst spoke at the dinner, he said that during the war it was easy to say “Save for a battleship or an aeroplane” and people had understood what was meant. He said that war was over but there was also the war of inflation and it was very difficult to say without having a slogan nowadays, not “Save for a gun, tank or a battleship”, but “Save for food, dollars and raw materials”. Mr Hurst said he thought that the Savings Movement had done a great deal to prevent runaway inflation. He produced two Greek banknotes. One issued in 1940 was for 100 drachma and worth 1/8, and the second issued four years later was for ten thousand million drachma and was worth 2d. He said this is something we do not want to happen here. He was convinced that if the Savings Movement had not helped to accumulate no less than six hundred million pounds, there would have been greater runaway inflation. He congratulated Stafford on its excellent savings in the Borough in the past year which had shown a 40 per cent increase on the previous year. The work of the Movement was done by group secretaries and street collectors, and he was glad there was a link between the Borough Council and the local Savings Movement, which he would like to see strengthened.

The Mayor of Stafford, Alderman C E Fowke, congratulated the savings workers in the town on their excellent results achieved in the last year. The total of £1,136,601 saved in the 12 months period to March 31st was an increase of £271,731 on the previous year. Councillor P W C Salmon (Chairman of the Local Savings Committee) presided at the dinner and Mr E B Potter (Assistant Commissioner for the Region) was among the guests. A vote of thanks to the speakers was proposed by Mr G S Tucker (Hon. Treasurer).

Before and after the dinner, two plays were performed by the Edensor Drama Group. They were “What a Carry On” and “The Friends of Valerie Lane”. Those taking part in the plays were Graham Sargeant, Olive Barlow, Peter Bott, Margaret Pope, Haldrane Plant, Margaret Myatt, Alan Dodd and Sheila Booth.
