Date:5th of April 1955

Description:Delegates from all over the County are pictured at the Spring Council meeting of the Staffordshire Federation of Women’s Institutes, held at the Borough Hall in Stafford on Tuesday 5 April.

Among some of the topics discussed at the meeting was the lack of provision of hot mid-day meals in several village schools around the county. The desirability of more elasticity in ladies stocking tops which was outlined by a Streetley member who said that the average ladies stocking would only stretch to 20 inches, which was not enough, fortunately a Gnosall delegate pointed out that crepe nylon stockings were now on the market and they had greater stretching power. There was a discussion on the participation of qualified demonstrators in Women’s Institute competitions in which beginners attempt to compete, and there was also a debate on an anti-litter campaign for villages including Hopwas and Longdon who were having an ongoing battle with Lichfield Rural District Council who were refusing to supply litter bins.
