These annual Methodist gatherings on a Monday in July could attract over 2,000 scholars in their best clothes to parade for their chapel group together with those of other local chapels, uniting behind their banners. The children were given the day off school for the event. They would sing hymns with tea being served and finisd up playing games in a field until they were tired. In 1909 it was stated that: "The Sunday Schools represented included Hednesford Weslyan, Hednesford Congregational, Hednesford Primitives Methodist, Wimblebury Primitive Methodist, Hightown U.M.F., and others". Methodism was particularly strong in the area, linked with the influx of Black Country coal miners in the late 19th century.
