Description:This postcard view shows the School House, built in 1818, and on the right is the new School building of 1889. The photograph was taken on Market Square, also known as School Square and in later years Market Place.
On the left is Market Street and on the right of the School House is the National Schools. Built in 1818 by Joseph Potter and paid for by Lord Hatherton, it was enlarged in 1889 in memory of Edward Richard Littleton, 2nd Baron Hatherton. In 1912 the school roll consisted of 122 boys and 100 girls. The headmaster was Albert E. Rogers and the mistress was Miss Annie Kilburn. In 1909 an Infants School was added. The buildings are currently occupied (April 2021) by St. Michael's First School.
