Description:A studio portrait photograph of William and Anne Pitt who lived in 16 Hope Street, Bignall End, Audley. William Pitt worked at the Jamage Colliery, and was still working down the coal mine when he died in 1922, aged 68 . Both William and Anne are buried at Audley Parish Church.
William Pitt' s eldest son William Albert Pitt, who was listed a “Colliery Weighman Above Ground” at Jamage Colliery in the 1911 census, went on to become a Justice of the Peace and a leading figure in civic life in the area. He was President of Butt Lane Industrial Co-operative Society in 1921, Vice Chairman of Kidsgrove Urban District Council 1933-34, Chairman of Kidsgrove Urban District Council 1934-35, and Chairman of Newcastle Divisional Labour Party 1933-34.
